Cuban olympic medalist given confiscated dwelling

HAVANA, Cuba, May 5 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org) - Cuban authorities have given to Olympic silver medalist Yaneliys Labrada Díaz a house taken from a family that says it had purchased it for US$5,000.

According to Lázaro Vidal, delegate of the Frank País November 30 Democratic Party, two housing inspectors backed by police broke into the house of the Figueroa family in Manzanillo and put all of their possessions on their street April 29. That same day, Labrada Díaz, runner-up in the Tae Kwon Do event, moved in.

Alicia Figueroa yelled "Murders, abusers" at the inspectors and policemen until she and her husband and children were placed in a police cruiser and taken to a shelter.

Delegate Vidal said the family had bought the house from its legitimate owner but that the transaction was illegal under existing Cuban law.
