Customers prefer private ice-cream shops
RANCHUELO, Cuba - April 29 (Félix
Tur Valladares, Cubanacán Press /
www.cubanet.org) - The opening of a privately-run
ice-cream shop April 26 makes seven in the
small municipality of Ranchuelo, in central
Cuba, and points to an odd phenomenon in
Cuba, where just about everything is run
by the government.
Presumably, these ice-cream shops wouldn't
be sprouting left and right if the public
didn't support them. The part that would
not be surprising to most people is that
the private operators are doing much better
than the government-run operations, and
that the public favor them. In fact, the
private operations are usually crowded with
waiting customers, both locals and passers-by.
In fact, Ranchuelo, although small itself,
is on the main east-west route across the
island and is an important transit point.
"Today, the ice-cream produced by
the private ice-cream shops in Ranchuelo
is the best-tasting and creamiest in Cuba,"
said one young lady who was traveling west.
She added that there is no comparison between
the product the privates produce and that
of the government-run establishments.
