Hepatitis in drinking water causes alarm in Cienfuegos

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba - June 5 (Luis Miguel González, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Residents of the Junco Sur neighborhood in Cienfuegos became alarmed May 24 after authorities reported water tanks were contaminated with hepatitis.

Some residents, mostly children, were reported hospitalized as a result of the contamination. Several mothers said their children had headaches and changes in their skin color after drinking the water, and that the ailment had been confirmed after clinical tests.

The municipal Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology stated the contamination could have been caused by the tanks' proximity to pig pens in the area.

In the absence of guidance by sanitary authorities, residents took it upon themselves to find a solution for their problem, emptying their water tanks onto the streets.
