Neighbors prevent police from seizing TV sets

HAVANA, July 27 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Neighbors on San Eugenio Street in Güira de Melena chased away several policemen who threatened to seize a television set from someone watching a Miami channel received on a satellite dish.

Eye witnesses said the incident took place July 21 when police were checking a residence for an alcohol still. When they discovered not a still by a program from the United States, they unplugged the set to remove it and said they'd do likewise with any other sets tuned to Miami.

As word spread, residents came out into the street and started yelling at the policemen. Fearing physical violence from the residents, the police withdrew and left the set alone.

For some time, the Cuban government has been campaigning against those who receive television signals by satellite dish, which private citizens are forbidden to own.
