Cuban police beat up pedicab driver

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, January 21 (Roberto García Cabrejas, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Police in Baracoa beat up a 28-year-old pedicab driver during a routine traffic stop, said bystanders.

Police said they stopped Wilder Lores Zanamé to check whether he had been drinking during the year-end festivities. Then, police told Zanamé's wife, he resisted arrest, so he had to be subdued by force.

Eyewitnesses said police beat Zanamé from the get go, sending him to the hospital. Now Zanamé is in jail, awaiting trial.
