State security prevents FLAMUR election
SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba,
December 1 (Guillermo Espinosa, APLO / www.cubanet.org)
- Agents of the Rapid Response Brigades
broke up a meeting this week to elect delegates
to the Cuban chapter of the Latin American
Federation of Rural Women, known as FLAMUR
by its Spanish acronym.
According to Maura Iset González,
delegate to FLAMUR from the municipality
of San Luis, some 20 agents led by a captain
named Plutón, set up loudspeakers
at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday outside the site
of the meeting to make discussion difficult.
She said some delegates from other provinces
were detained by the police and forced to
return home.
She said the husband of one participant,
Ana Belkis, suffered a injury to his face
in a scuffle with police.
The political police in the municipality
of Bahía Honda in Pinar del Río
province seized 44 pounds of medicine sent
to Minerva Corbillón, provincial
FLAMUR president. The shipment had been
sent by FLAMUR supporters outside of Cuba
and was destined for the needy in the area.
"It's an issue that has nothing to
do with politics and is s gesture of human
solidarity," said Corbillón.
