Observer: Cuba libre?

April 26 2005 in The Financial Times.

Fidel Castro has abandoned his rightwing tendencies.

This may come as a shock to those who know the Cuban dictator as one of the world's last ardent communist leaders. But the eagle-eyed folks at the CIA's Foreign Broadcasting Information Service have released a report pointing out that Castro has been gesticulating more with his left than his right hand.

"President Castro, who is right-handed and known for gesticulating extensively with his right arm while speaking, has been progressively favouring his left arm since February," says FBIS's latest report on Castro's famously long speeches, pointed out by Secrecy News.

"In his public addresses of 7 and 11 April, President Castro primarily uses his left arm to gesture and shuffle notes, and repeatedly kneads his right shoulder and arm with his left hand." It's reassuring that with the war on terror in full swing US spooks have time on their hands for such things.
