Some 10 miles of power cables and telephone lines stolen in Santiago de Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, March 30 (Aleaga Pesant, UPECI / www.cubant.org) - Thieves reportedly cut and stole about 10 miles of power cables and telephone lines last year in the province of Santiago de Cuba.

The weekly Sierra Maestra newspaper said the thievery continued at an increased rate during the first quarter. It said that if the rate continued, the total for 2005 would reach nearly 13 miles.

The cables and lines are sold for their content of copper.

According to Sierra Maestra, of 147 cases of stolen cables and liens reported in the entire country last year, 35 occurred in Santiago de Cuba.

The publications said the most affected organizations were the telecommunications company, ETECSA, and the train system.
