FROM CUBA
45,000 without water for five days in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, September 9 (Richard Roselló / www.cubanet.org) A burned-out pump left 45,000 residents of Batabanó, a small city south of Havana, without running water five days ago and with no respite in sight.

Presumably an electrical discharge damaged the pump when it hit Monday. Residents have had to fend for themselves since then.

"This is too much," said an older woman, pushing a wheelbarrow full of water buckets. Others get their water from distant wells.

"We have been putting up with this for five days. It is the end", said one man who pointed out there were no tank trucks available to distribute water.

Batabanó is still recovering from the impact of hurricane Charley August 13 and a subsequent storm which left the city without water for 10 days.
