Trio fined equivalent of six months' salary for trying to escape Cuba

HAVANA, July 6 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez/www.cubanet.org) - A Naval judge has fined three men 3,000 pesos - the equivalent of 15 months' salary - for trying to leave the island in a 15-foot motorboat they found.

One of the men, Maikel Pérez Castañeda, said he found the boat abandoned in some reeds. He and Harold Michel Torres Soto and Norberto Chacón legally bought a battery and 60 liters of gas for the trip.

But they were arrested in the port of Mariel in April before they could put to sea.

Captain Jorge Luis Navarro Nolasco signed the resolution ordering the fine. The trio said the fine was too high and that the battery and gas were missing from the inventory of what was seized by the authorities.
