Cuban bishop celebrates 25 years at
Mass
Posted on Thu, Apr. 01,

Auxiliary Bishop Agustin Roman commemorated
25 years as a bishop by celebrating a Mass
of Thanksgiving on March 24 at St. Mary
Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese.
Born in San Antonio de los Banos in Cuba
in 1928, Roman was ordained to the priesthood
in 1959 for the Diocese of Matanzas. In
1961, he was among 132 Cuban priests expelled
from Cuba by Fidel Castro. He went to Chile,
where he lived and worked four years before
coming to Miami.
In 1979, Roman became the first Cuban in
200 years to be appointed a Catholic bishop
in the United States. Last year, on his
75th birthday, he submitted his resignation
as bishop, as required by canon law.
Following the Mass, Roman received guests
at a reception in his honor in the Archdiocesan
Hall at the cathedral.
