HAVANA, March 27 (Ernesto Roque / www.cubanet.org) - By Monday, March 24,
when many here thought the wave of arrests of dissidents, independent
journalists and librarians was over, independent journalist Normando Hernández
was arrested at home, bringing the number of arrested journalists to 27.
"Two political officers came to our home Sunday afternoon," said
Hernández' wife, Yarahy Reyes. "They left notice for my husband to
appear Monday morning at headquarters."
Hernández, the director of the Independent Journalists' Association
in Camagüey province, was arrested at home Monday morning. Police took the
family's exit visas, said Hernández' wife. "The exit documents were
confiscated by authorities; we were waiting to leave the country," said
Reyes.
Another arrested journalist, Manuel Vázquez Portal, also reported
authorities took his family's travel documents under similar circumstances.
