HAVANA, March 27 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The first
dissident to be tried of the more than 70 arrested in the last week was
sentenced to six months in jail for "disobedience" by the municipal
tribunal in Jovellanos, Matanzas province.
Miguel Sigler Amaya, the public relations secretary of the independent
Alternative Option Movement, was arrested March 19. He will also be tried for
the same offense by the municipal tribunal in neighboring Pedro Betancourt, also
in Matanzas province.
The trial was open to the public, and about 20 dissidents attended to show
their support, said Sigler's wife, Josefa López Peña.
"The trial was a show of manipulation, the witnesses were police and
their testimonies were contradictory," said López. She explained
that Sigler testified on his behalf, but "the court did not take his
testimony into account and sentenced him, even though they could not prove his
guilt."
