HAVANA, March 12 (Ana Leonor Díaz, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) -
The homes of two independent journalists were stoned Saturday night in Güines,
a town south of Havana.
The sequential timing of the incidents suggested to some that the same
person or persons were involved. First, at 10:30 p.m., the home of José
Izquierdo Hernández was pelted. Two windows were broken, and the front
door and the roof were damaged.
About an hour later, at 11:45 p.m., Miguel Galván's home, some
distance away from the first, was also stoned.
The journalists see a pattern in these attacks. Both Galván and
Izquierdo were the victims of violent acts last year.
Galván was arrested in April, 2002, in nearby San José de las
Lajas, where he was reporting at the time. He said he was taken into a car
belonging to the Department of State Security and taken to Aguacate, about 20
miles from Güines. There, he was thrown from the moving car, breaking ribs
and suffering lacerations in all extremities.
Izquierdo said he was warned by two State Security agents December 4 not to
attend festivities for Saint Barbara planned for that day in Güines.
Izquierdo said he had nevertheless attended, and that as he returned home on
his bicycle he was hit by a car in the outskirts of town, causing him lesions
which kept him in bed for several days.
