NUEVITAS, March 11 (José Manuel Caraballo Bravo, APLA /
www.cubanet.org) - For the last two weeks authorities have been imposing fines
on anyone caught with either fish of fishing gear in Nuevitas, on the north
coast of Cuba.
Inspectors from the Ministry of Fisheries and officers of the National
Police have staked out several points along the coast and have been intercepting
anyone carrying fish or fishing equipment, taking them to the local police
station and imposing fines of between 1,500 and 5,000 pesos.
A local fisherman, Hugo Herrera, said the prohibition on fishing also has
the objective of preventing the theft of boats used by people to sail off to the
United States.
Herrera said most people who go fishing do so to supplement their families'
food basket or to make a little money by selling their catch.
