The truth about the Proyecto Varela

January 13, 2003. New Generation Cuba.

New Generation Cuba supports the thousand of Cubans that signed the Proyecto Varela believing that they were doing something to bring about a change in the Tyranny and not a Transition with the permanence of the Communist System on the power. We recognize the great act of patriotism of all those who had the courage to sign this petition with their Identity Card Number, even though they knew the risks this implicate.

New Generation Cuba encourages all proposals that will help to bring down the Tyranny, but we will not endorse the Proyecto Varela for the following reasons:

1- The Rights that Paya wants to take to a referendum are inalienable, this Rights and Freedoms are not to be taken to the voting booth, they are recognized on the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights, of which Cuba is a signer.

2- It legitimizes the Tyranny by basing the Proyecto Varela on the Communist Constitution of 1976, and thus giving way for a Transition with the permanence of the Communist System on the power. This Constitution was imposed to the people of Cuba by the Delegates of the only legal Party inside of Cuba, the people did not vote for it, this makes it illegal.

3- It does not recognizes the heroic acts of the Historical Political Prisoners, discriminates the political prisoners in its Amnesty, all political prisoners with real or fictitious charges of acts against the Tyranny are exempt from being free, and thus unable to vote on its proposed referendum.

4- It forbids the Exiled community including the newcomers to participate in the political arena of our Homeland for one year, allowing the Communist Elite in the country to share among them the political and economical control of the Island.
