Medical students praise imprisoned doctor on Medicine Day in Cuba

HAVANA, Dec. 4 (www.cubanet.org) - Five students at the Institute of Medical Science in the capital sent a message to jailed dissident doctor Oscar Elías Biscet on Medicine Day celebrated this week in Cuba.

"It's a crime to jail a doctor for wanting life and peace for his people and his nation," said student Javier González Rodríguez, who said he did not fear government reprisals for his remarks. "I want to live free, and Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet, to whom we send this day a message of hope and solidarity, is a good example of what a doctor should be."

Fellow student Yaritza Gómez said that December 3 was a good day for health workers to start demanding fulfillment of their rights, including the right to leave the country.
