GÜINES, October 24 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Patients who have stayed at the "Leopoldo Martínez"
general hospital in San José de las Lajas in Havana province complain
about the poor service and the generally unsanitary conditions in the hospital.
Specifically, patients say the hospital often lacks running water, and that
medically-indicated meals are seldom provided. As a matter of fact, patients say
that most of their meals are brought in by their own families.
Obdulia Marrero, who is pregnant, said: "I need a daily dose of red
meat, fish or eggs, because Ive been diagnosed with low hemoglobin and
malnutrition, but in the seven days Ive been here, Ive only had
protein three times."
Benancio Domínguez, 72, said the main polyclinic, adjacent to the
hospital, is filthy. The bathrooms, he said, lack hydraulic connections, causing
urine to spill onto the floor.
The "Leopoldo Martínez" hospital takes care of patients in
San José de las Lajas, and nearby Tapaste, Madruga, and Jaruco. About two
years ago it underwent repairs.
