Sanitation in maternity hospital deplorable, say patients

HAVANA, October 18 (Víctor M. Domínguez, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - The poor sanitary conditions at the "América Arias" maternity hospital in Havana is due to the scarcity of cleaning personnel, who are only paid 100 pesos a month, or 3.84 dollars at the current exchange rate.

The poor conditions are noticeable primarily on the floors and in the bathrooms. In ward J, on the third floor, the bathrooms have been stopped up for days now. The stench from these bathrooms permeates the adjacent 20-bed wards. "This hospital was recently remodeled and it’s a pity that it should be in this condition," said Nirka Céspedes, who recently was housed in ward J.
