HAVANA, October 1 (Ernesto Roque / www.cubanet.org) - The "Juan Borrell"
rural community in Güines, south of Havana, has been without medical
services for more than a month, since the doctor assigned to the area left and
the Public Health Ministry has not assigned a replacement.
Rogelio Ramos, a local resident, said: "Our doctor, Liván
Cordero, left more than 30 days ago, and we don't know why. So far, we don't
have a replacement."
Ramos said the nurses in the local dispensary will not explain to patients
what happened to the doctor or when the problem will be addressed.
Some here say doctor Cordero, 41, was assigned to "international"
duties by the Ministry; i.e. sent to a foreign country as a public relations and
hard-currency earning measure. But then, others say the good doctor is on
vacation or on his honeymoon.
The "Juan Borrell" community consists of 930 people, and depends
entirely on having a local doctor as it has no ambulance service available.
Recently, a young woman known only as Quirimay took an overdose of diazepam,
and no one knew what to do to help her. "There wasn't a car here to take
her to the hospital in Güines. Fortunately, a truck came by and we took her
out. She's in the psychiatric ward in Catalina de Güines," said Raudel
Mirabal, a resident.
