GÜINES, December 12 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / ) - The
relatives of three who died Friday, December 6, in Güines, had to buy the
flowers to make their flower arrangements, because the municipal flower shop
suspended all service by government orders.
The order provided that all available flowers be used in commemorative
wreaths to remember, on December 7, the Cubans who died in the "Internationalist"
wars. Cuba sent troops to several African countries during the 70s and 80s.
The grieving relatives had to appeal to private flower shops for their
flowers.
"I had to buy 8 dozen glads and 2 dozen day lilies to have an
arrangement made. On top of that, they charged me 10 pesos for labor. In all, I
paid 70 pesos," said Ángel Martínez.
An arrangement at the government flower shops costs between 25 and 50 pesos,
but their flowers seem poor by comparison with those provided by private flower
shops.
Most of the flowers used in flower arrangements come from private growers,
because the government is not able to supply all the flowers florists need,
saying they lack resources to tend to their own gardens.
