HAVANA, October 23 (Ohalys Víctore, Cuba Voz) At least 26
cases of leptospirosis, one fatal, have been reported in three hospitals in
Havana. Medical specialists said that the "Clínico Quirúrgico
de 26," "Salvador Allende," and "Policlínico Pasteur"
have treated 7, 12, and 5 cases respectively. One of the seven patients treated
at the Clínico Quirúrgico died as a result of the disease.
Officials of the Public Health Ministry deny the existence of an epidemic.
Statistics for 1990 register 30 million rats in the island, or more than two for
every Cuban. Leptospirosis is spread by rat waste. Officials have said that
residents of areas where the disease has been reported would be vaccinated, but
no vaccinations have taken place so far.
