HAVANA, October 12 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) - Sewer waters from
overtaxed pipes have been flowing freely for four years through the streets of
Alturas de La Habana district, in Havana.
The worst affected area is the corner of Beatriz and 8 Streets, where there
stand the Irma Rosa Chui primary school, a children's dining facility, the
Casino hosiery factory, and, about 100 yards away, the Capdevila polyclinic.
One of the custodians at the school said that the sewer department
sporadically cleans the sewer pipes, but that in any case these are too narrow
to carry the effluent from all the new construction in the area of Altahabana,
upstream. Complaints by residents to the authorities have not produced results.
