HAVANA, October 4 (Héctor Maseda, Grupo Decoro) - Thirty workers were
laid-off due to "administrative readjustment" in a plant producing
pre-fab modules for housing in Morón, Ciego de Ávila province.
The lay-offs are one more manifestation of a campaign that seeks to make
State enterprises more efficient, abandoning the former full-employment
socialist model. The management of the Empresa de Prefabricados Sandino, the
pre-fab plant in question, seeks "efficiency and profitability" in the
economic activity of the firm.
The socialist safety net has also fallen victim to the new methods;
approximately half the workers were considered regulars and sent home at 60
percent of their salary; the others were considered contract employees and were
given no benefits.
