Rice Plantings To Be Reduced

HAVANA, May 18 (Moraima Pires, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro) – The area dedicated to planting rice will be reduced this year to minimize damage due to mites and other plagues, according to information released by the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture.

A few weeks ago, the ministry announced that it was switching rice acreage to cattle feed and to the production of tobacco for export. Rice is a staple in the Cuban diet and has not been plentiful in the last few years. It is expected that as a result of the new measures, its availability will be even more limited.
