No Apparent Motive for Attack on Journalist

HAVANA, January 18 (Cruz Onofre Ávila, Cuba Press) - A man struck an independent Cuban journalist in the face with a blunt object in a Havana street Monday night. There was no apparent motive for the attack. The man came out of a construction site, surprising Mery Miranda, 32, as she walked along a street in the Vedado sector after 7 p.m. The blow rendered Ms. Miranda unconscious. Her assailant disappeared without attempting to take either her personal belongings or the attache case she was carrying.

Ms. Miranda has worked with Cuba Press since the summer of 1999. On Tuesday, Ms. Miranda remained under medical observation, complaining of a strong headache. She had previously been struck in the face by a jail guard when she was in police custody on December 10.
