HAVANA, February 17 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) - Prison inmate Edelmiro López Cruz, 36, was sick for two weeks before prison authorities transferred him to the "León Cuervo Rubio" hospital in Pinar del Río, western Cuba. He died six days later of typhoid
fever.
On January 6, López received a visit from his family and told them he had been running a fever of up to 103 F for eleven days. Up to that time prison authorities had only given him aspirin.
Two days later, authorities transferred him to the hospital, where he died on February 12.
López, the father of three minor children, had served one year, ten months of a three year, six month sentence imposed for having butchered a horse he owned.
