HAVANA, January 30 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad) - Political prisoner Miguel Sánchez Valiente has been on a hunger strike since December 30, demanding the benefits stipulated in the Cuban Penal Code after having served more than one third of his sentence.
Sánchez Valiente, 62, is in the "Combinado del Este" prison, serving a sentence presumably for spying. Before this act of civic resistance, he has engaged in two fasts demanding his conditional liberty. So far he has lost more than 40 pounds and experienced several health
problems for which the authorities have not provided medical attention.
Mercedes Sánchez, his daughter, said she is worried about her father's precarious health and added emphatically: "I'm afraid for his life due to the inflexibility of the officials of the Bureau of Prisons of the Ministry of the Interior."
"I am asking all freedom-loving people in the world to do something for my father, for their support in asking for his liberty; we fear for his life, because his health is truly poor," concluded the daughter of Miguel Sánchez Valiente. |
